PSG Edges Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side struck two times late to take a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the final seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
