Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, demons, and sinister influences expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Key plot points for the latest installment of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of heroes who will split off from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

With an extensive roster, it was evident from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the events of episode 3 show why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing initiated the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to auction.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each character has a personal reason to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • The adventurer is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to execute the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their status as important members in House Halovar could assist the party reach places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to head to the remote area in search of the antagonist.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the combat party will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the players to form the Seekers and Planners tables.

Viewers can expect discovering which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
